Soulive drummer Alan Evans is probably as well known these days for the stuff he does with his side project Alan Evans Trio and new single Gimmie Some Momo (the band’s first new material since ’21’s Elephant Head) gives you some idea why. And that’s because it’s a blistering slice of upbeat, Hammond funk that exemplifies why you can’t beat – well – a blistering slice of upbeat, Hammond funk. There’s the fact that it’s funky of course but there’s also just something about the Hammond sound that turns any frown upside down and has ensured the enduring legacy of myriad Mohawks’ cuts such as Beat Me Till I’m Blue and The Champ along with the careers of James Taylor Quartet, Big Boss Man, Link Quartet and the like.
