REX REY: Play That Shit (2013)

[RATING: 5] Heads up – new dope from California king, Rex Rey in the shape of 8 track hip-hop instro EP Play That Shit. Expect sample-infused boom-bap – though you should know that Rex Rey‘s own keys, bass and guitar form a significant part of what’s on offer. Cinematic? Chilled? Blunted? He’d be the first man to admit that the core of past instrumental compilations could be described thus. This though? Perhaps the second half which seems to take its cue from John Carpenter movie scores (Misseos), or occupies a similar musical territory to recent Will C material or the early RJD2-ish title track. The first few tracks are somewhat more energetic however. Electric Charged Destiny is pitched somewhere between west coast psychedelia and early Def Jux while Throw Back Breakin‘s big drums are geared towards the b-boys – as the title might suggest. One things for sure – you will be playing that shit. Oh yeah – one more thing – he’s looking for the right MC to do vocal versions…
