LONGDISTANCEDAN: The Psychedelic Beat Tape

You know when your email decides that loads of stuff you’ve never marked as spam because you actually want it is spam and puts it in your spam folder alongside all the Casino Spins, Ukrainian Beauties and financially inconvenienced Nigerian princes? Right – well that’s what happened with this (hence the tardy coverage) – LongDistanceDan’s latest release – his epic The Psychedelic Beat Tape. Epic why? Well, partly because it consists of a mighty twenty-seven tracks. Still, it is a beat tape though, which means the overall length won’t be much different from your typical album because despite having twice as many tracks they’ll be short showcase cuts advertising our man’s proficiency as a veteran constructor of beats won’t they? They will indeed – but this is also epic because every cut on here is made from psychedelic and early prog rock samples without the assistance of additional funky drum breaks and sample packs. Oh – and not to mention the fact of music itself being sourced from genres that lend themselves to evoking the epic. Right up your street if Edan’s Beauty & The Beat floats your boat and that’s an album which has certainly floated an armada’s-worth in its time. An absolute joy to listen to, this may well be the first beat tape ever to find itself in the monkey’s end of year top ten LPs! The tape was available in the Devil’s own physical format of the cassette tape (of course!) as a limited item but is now sold out though it can be obtained digitally. As if that wasn’t enough, there is also a stupendously dope companion piece two-part mixtape available which showcases the sample sources that led to the Beat Tape’s creation. You want all of this in your life.
