Formerly to be found fronting Barcelona’s The Excitements, pint-sized singer with a big voice Koko Jean Davis has been belting them out backed by new band The Tonics since 2020. A case in point is new single Love Child. Drawing heavily from mid-sixties sounds this single diverges from typical Excitements gear (and to be fair previous KJ & The Tonics stuff) in being modelled not so much on R&B as on the driving beat that typifies what became known in the seventies as ‘northern soul.’ This one is the first single and title track to be lifted from the band’s forthcoming second LP on which Davis regales being born to the sound of a Motown beat during a sweaty evening of passion. Blimey.
