It’s been a while (nine years to be precise!) since the monkey last heard from Smith & The Honey Badgers all the way back in 2014 with the release of their debut 45 The Honey Badger Strut. In the yawning gap between then and now, there was actually another 45 – The Billionaire Strut – while the profile of singer Marietta Smith has soared due to becoming part of The Allergies’ extended family and featuring on such gems as Take Another Look At It – the closing highlight of the recent Tear The Place Up LP. The latest Smith & The Honey Badgers’ single fortuitously drops in the slipstream of said Allergies album and features Shadows and Nothing Lasts Forever. The former track finds Smith delivering a yearning vocal about searching for an absent loved one over a brisk horns-rich funky soul backdrop while the latter chugs along in a more sedate late 70s-influenced musical style. Currently only available in digital format, a 45 version is set to follow later in the summer on Funk Night Records!
