Golden Rules Records’ contemporary funk and soul sampler vinyl LP, The Originals Vol. 3 arrives this year (as in previous years) in October and the next digital single to be released is Cole Williams’ A Better Woman. And the label has bagged another classic. This one is all about a lush soul arrangement as fat horns, chanking guitar and orchestral strings accompany the sweet soul tones of New Orleans songstress Williams over slo-mo boom-bap drums. Tonally uplifting, the song praises the positive attentions of a lover and even lyrically tips its hat to Shakespeare’s Sonnet 43 – “How much do I love thee?/ Let me count the ways.” Which isn’t something you hear every day on the funk and soul scene now is it?
