LONGDISTANCEDAN: The Moving Target EP

He might be called LongDistanceDan but there’s been but a tiny gap between new drop The Moving Target EP and his excellent The Psychedelic Beat Tape in June. Stylistically however there is somewhat more – er – distance between what the beat tape drew on for inspiration – i.e. psychedelia (obviously – it’s in the name!) from the late sixties/early seventies and what the new EP is inspired by – to wit, “breakbeat, house, rave, big beat, old school UK hip hop and more,” as Dan put. Long time readers will know the word ‘house’ in association with music brings the monkey out in hives so it was a relief to find out that our Mr D must have been referring to the sort of house that once made it onto now legendary ’90s big beat compilation Brit Hop And Amyl House which is to say nothing more ‘house-y’ than acid squelches and FX over fat breaks. Talking of which – any of the tracks off this would slot in nicely onto said comp’s tracklist. If the monkey were a wine-taster and this release wine, any references to ‘house’ and ‘rave’ would be expunged from a description of the ‘bouquet’ for this is redolent of early UK big beat and has delicate top-notes of Depth Charge, Death In Vegas and early Chemical Brothers – before they got in trouble for using the Dust Brothers name. I’m even getting a bit of Freq Nasty off his debut LP Freqs, Geeks and Mutilations. For those who were there, I Make The B-Line (Phat) will make you positively nostalgic! Like everything LongDistanceDan makes, this is well worth your time and he’s such a legend he’s made it available on a name-your-price basis! What’s not to like?
