BK ONE: Tema Do Canibal EP feat. Doom (2011) + remix contest

DJ/ Producer BK One, known to many as ‘Brother Ali’s tour DJ’, arranges no fewer than six reprises of one of the tracks from his highly-regarded 2009 LP Radio Do Canibal. It’s what you might regard as cannibalisation of a track from an album which itself salutes Brazilian music’s ability to cannibalise other culture’s music for it’s own dancefloor ends. And there’s no doubting the dancefloor credentials of this here nugget as the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble-featuring edit of the original is a proper ass-n-titty shaker while the Mike 2600 remix cleans up in the Latin-disco stakes. Doom’s contribution comes on the heavyweight hip-hop head-nodder from Exile, Brazilian legend Arthur Verocai drops his own dope soul-jazz cover version and DJ Nuts and Tom Noble explore a further range of percussive possibilities…all on one 12”! Caramba! Que e funky! If you think you can do better – you can even have a stab at remixing it yourself for the Tema Do Canibal remix comp. – details below…

Tema Do Canibal Mega-Mix by BK-One

(PRESS RELEASE)
Minneapolis DJ/producer BK-One has announced the follow up to his Brazilian inspired opus, 2009’s Rádio Do Canibal. The forthcoming EP, dropping on Rhymesayers Entertainment August 30th, is comprised of remixes of the album cut “Tema Do Canibal”. With contributions from the legendary MF Doom, Brazilian maestro Arthur Verocai, West Coast producer Exile, Chicago’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, famed São Paulo percussionist Helcio Milito and many more, BK has assembled a worldly collection of talent to reinterpret his music.

Available exclusively through iTunes and on hand-numbered, transparent green vinyl, the EP starts by introducing the listener to BK’s multi-layered tropical aesthetic by way of the “Tema Do Canibal Video Edit” featuring the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Things quickly change pace with Exile’s expert chopping of the original horns and Doom’s expectedly bizarre verse on the “Mind The Gap Remix”. Among Brazil’s most notable DJs and record collectors, DJ Nuts flexes his expert knowledge by contributing the “Tamba Remix” which features Helcio Milito on the tamba, a percussion instrument he invented in the early ’60s. Further Brazilian influence comes from the oft-sampled Arthur Verocai who writes, arranges, conducts, and produces an entirely new version of BK’s “Tema Do Canibal”. The B-side is rounded out by two outstanding interpretations intended to light up the dancefloor. Mike 2600 amps up the tempo in his “Journey Into Sound Remix” and replaces the original’s thick horn lines with squiggly keyboards, while Tom Noble’s “Disco Ginga Remix” drenches those horns in reverb and adds disco-inspired batucada drums. Between BK-One’s groundbreaking collaboration with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and the five wildly different reinterpretations made by such a talented and diverse group of artists, this EP is not to be missed.

Tema Do Canibal remix contest details:
BK One says, “On my new Tema Do Canibal EP, I had 7 different musicians from very different backgrounds reinterpret one of my favorite songs off my last album. The results range from a soulful and jazzy meditation to a bare bones percussion freak-out. From a blistering dancefloor anthem to a dark and bizarre hip hop opus.

Now I want to see what you can do. I’m giving you the drum track that I created for “Tema Do Canibal” and the horn track recorded by The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Use as much or as little of them as you want, and add anything you can dream up (extra points for originality). When you’re done with your creation, upload it to my dropbox on Soundcloud. Go to soundcloud.com/bk-one and click on the dropbox tab (underneath my picture, to the right of “tracks”, “sets”, etc…). Do anything you want and submit as many different creations as you can think up. I’ll personally pick my favorite on August 26th. The winner will receive a copy of the Tema Do Canibal EP, a copy of Rádio Do Canibal, all four stamps designed by Mike 2600, all inside a Rhymesayers cinch bag. The winners track will be uploaded to my Soundcloud page and played on RSE Radio, Rhymesayers weekly radio show on KFAI.”
