MOZAIK SES: The Last Shootout/ Wormhole (Ltd. Vinyl 7″)

Nearly a year after the last vinyl release from Delights (sadly due to the bankruptcy of a pressing plant) comes the next 45 from Mozaik Ses – a.k.a. the psych-funk supergroup consisting of The Poets of Rhythm/ Karl Hector & the Malcouns’ JJ Whitefield, various members of VuVuVu and Delights’ main man Markey Funk, himself. Taken from the same recording session as the band’s debut release – the atmospherically funky Aralkum b/w Zellij which dropped just over three years ago – The Last Shootout b/w Wormhole once more blends the spirit of Delia Derbyshire with loose-limbed library funk. The former is the more immediately in-your-face one with a groove (and a title) evoking the tense gunplay between cops and gangsters in some retro- Euro-crime flick. You can see it now, can’t you? Dusk on a deserted 70s industrial estate and the bust has just gone tits up. Meanwhile, Wormhole, initially all swirling atmospherics, develops into an antsy rhythm and eventually into a fuzz-guitar drenched, breakbeat black hole – “I’m afraid Dave. Dave my mind is going…”
(Out 13 November on Delights)
