Blimey – a free download – remember them? Of course you do! When you’re not playing wax on the wheels of steel, you’re rocking downloads, unlike those idiots who let the man control their music via artist-undermining streamers so that when they lose access to the web or their account they lose access to their music, right? Right?! Anyway, here’s DJ Pnutz with two brand-new, seasonally-themed hip-hop cuts – Phantasm feat. K-Rock Tha Fantom and Tales From The Darkside feat. Scvtterbrain – both veterans of the San Diego hip-hop scene. And yes, those tracks are named after the cult late 70s horror flick featuring the ‘Tall Man’ and George Romero’s highly respected ‘Twilight Zone’-style 80s anthology series respectively. I wonder – could either of the tracks in question sample from the audio-visual delight after which they are named? They certainly could! Phantasm employs the movie theme’s John Carpenter-esque piano motif while ‘Darkside uses the synth from the opening credits along with its unmistakable, opening voiceover – you know – “Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality. But…there is, unseen by most, an underworld” etc. All over the chunkiest of drum breaks and menacing synth bass courtesy of Pnutz, of course. Meanwhile our mic heroes meditate on the desperation of the damned. For who does not in these benighted times?
