Taiwanese ‘Soulful Gent’ Yufu channels the sound of early 70s stateside soul on new single Side Effects May Include by way of a follow-up to and coda for recent debut LP Heal Me Good, lyrically considering the effects of ‘lurve’ on a man. Yufu describes himself as a ‘perpetual student of Black music’ and this single shows he’s at the top of his class, with a funky rhythm that harks back to the Latin funky rhythms of Tighten Up, the rich layering of Philly Soul and a vocal delivery on at least nodding terms with Al Green. Indeed it’s not just the sonic stylings Yufu takes seriously either since his approach to working in the studio, “embraces tape saturation, microphone bleed, room sound, imperfect timing and the energy created when musicians play together.” Blimey! Comes with LP cut Back In Your Eyes on the flip. Digital only as things stand but surely, there’s got to be a 45 at some point?
