Umbo’s the man of the moment in terms of funk edits it seems what with him doing one side of the latest Soul Flip Edits 45 (not to mention last year’s Resense 057) and now both sides of this – Toxic Funk Vol. 18 – the latest 45 from the Breakbeat Paradise stable. So how’s he going to kick it on B-side, Saoco Root then? He’s gonna kick it root down of course as breakneck Latin breakbeats get pitted against a certain Beasties acapella. Round these parts though it’s No Sugar – rightfully positioned as the A-side – which takes the laurels. Here, a stateside girl group whose career kicked off ten years prior to that with what was once described as their ‘naive schoolgirl’ sound have one of their lesser-known, late-sixties funky-soul cuts with altogether more knowing lyrics edited into something a little more chunky. Banger! Trouble is, this thing’s so cheeky it seems the usual sources aren’t able to host embeddable audio – so you’ll have to make do with the humble Juno player.
