Basking in the success of Freak The Speaker their milestone seventh album in eight years, The Allergies release the LP’s final single Watch What You Say today. And this one finds them on yet another excursion beyond the boundaries of their signature sixties-samples-meets-funky-drumbreaks sound (as many of the singles have this time around) whilst staying broadly within party-related breakbeat territory. For Watch What You Say draws its inspiration from both George Clinton’s P-Funk and Trouble Funk’s DC Go-go music, not to mention a few samples from the latter to boot. As if that’s not enough, New JB’s collaborator James Morton is responsible for the track’s brass while Charles Morgan (last heard with the boys on 2023’s soul-bluesy Reconcile) delivers the lead vocal with backing from Marietta Smith and Andy C who gets pitched up Parliament Aqua Boogie-style on additional vocals. Watch what you say now – it’s either going to be ‘Hell yeah!’ or ‘Get your hands in the air!’
