It’s all about the instrumental midtempo funk on latest single Drummer XXX from The Winston Brothers. The track is based around a super crunchy drum break adorned with a clavinet and horns – the bassy parps of the latter, along with additional percussion, providing something of an afro/Ethio feel. Looks like this will be the final single before new LP Sweets arrives early next month and it features Poets Of Rhythm drummer Max Weissenfeldt in addition to the band’s own Lucas Kochbeck. Turns out Weissenfeldt isn’t the only guest on forthcoming LP Sweets either as the Brothers’ Kochbeck and Sbeastian Nagel’s connections extend across the Hamburg funk scene which includes The Mighty Mocambos, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and Angels of Libra. Expect the rich analog sound on Drummer XXX and previous singles Get On Down and Rolling to very much reflect the forthcoming sound of Sweets – dropping early next month
(Out now on Colemine Records)
