RESENSE 028: Panama Cardoon ‘Feelin Roll’/ Sono Rhizmo ‘Do Your Stuff’ (2012)

Damn! This is the best Resense 45 since the last one featuring Panama Cardoon. On it Cardoon’s feeling ‘roll’ which you can take to mean pretty smug with himself once again as he blends Mr Scruff and Wayne Marshall for a guaranteed hands-in-the-air, boom-bap bounce drenched in organ riffs and island vibes. But hang on – has Sono Rhizmo

stolen his thunder with his ‘heavier beat refix’ of Do Your Stuff by vintage Miami funky soul king Mr Percolator himself – Perk Badger (a.k.a. Pearstine Badger), which will most certainly have anyone and everyone in earshot doing their stuff? I can’t decide – they’re totally different but equally brilliant, the yin to each other’s musical yang – if you will. Frankly Resense 28 is something of a Mexican stand-off. Or rather (given Cardoon and Rhizmo’s respective nationalities) a Greek/ German stand-off. Which sounds a bit political. There’s probably a gag in there somewhere…
