REGALADO: Pinoy Funk

If you thought South East Asian funk started and ended with Soul Jugglers and The Hangmen – think again – for here is Regelado’s Pinoy Funk, the first single and title track off forthcoming compilation Aye Ko Disco or, more accurately, Soundway Records presents: Ayo Ke Disco Boogie, Pop & Funk from the South China Sea (1974-88). As the title suggests, this one hails from the Phillipines. It opens with the claps and bell percussions building layers until sparse wah-wah chops and bass come in and are finally joined by sax and keyboards for maximum late-night boogie-funk deepness.
