Ask anyone to name two of Missy Elliott’s biggest cuts and they’ll more than likely name the tracks Get Ur Freak On and Work It – both of which will turn 25 (!) in the next year. What better time for Voodoocuts to return then (having been away since last September) with a 45 featuring cheeky edits of that very same pair of bangers? On the A-side, Riddim Freak jettisons Timbaland’s distinctive bhangra-influenced beat on Get Ur Freak On for one no less influenced by ‘world music’ and likely to be equally devastating on the dancefloor. Work This meanwhile ditches Timbaland’s somewhat old school electro-influenced beat for Work It for an actual old-school beat i.e. the one used for Run-DMC and Aerosmith’s Walk This Way which sits nicely underneath the vocals. Look sharp if you want a copy of this first release on new label Ritmo since the copies and test pressings on the Voodoocuts Bandcamp have already sold out.
