Followers of psych-funk over the last decade and more will know that releases by Swiss band Kind & Kinky are like comets – few and far between but always impress when they arrive. I think I’m correct in saying that their last original release prior to new single Hummingbird was 2022 LP Swamp – although 2024 saw a brace of Soul Supreme remixes. And so to Hummingbird which offers something of a change in direction, setting interplanetary course to a world that appears to be in the Khruangbin system. The beat is much less heavily syncopated than is typical of the band’s oeuvre, offering a four-to-the-floor space-disco centre of gravity around which orbit distorted guitar, Rhodes piano and flute. If that sounds up your alley, there’s more of the same on flip Concrete Lungs (which comes in extended and radio edit formats) though slightly deeper and heavier with a more complex rhythm pattern. Turn on, tune in, psych out!
