THE WAX PREACHERS: Aldgate East/ Gamma Ray (Vinyl 7″)/ The Holy Mountain/ Sun Trap (Vinyl 7″)

Nothing for ages and then two come along at once? It’s ‘yes and no’ – as the monkey’s old mate Bri used to say. It’s ‘no’ because (as MB Regulars will know) The Wax Preachers released a single featuring the mighty Carlton Jumel Smith a mere two months ago entitled Gotta Go Home which clearly isn’t ‘nothing for ages.’ Then again, it’s a ‘yes’ because label Funk Night Records very much have released two new Wax Preachers singles simultaneously due to vinyl pressing plant delays. Deja vu! Didn’t this happen before back in ’21 with two ‘Preachers 45s coming out due to delays again (at least partly to do with pressing plant issues)? Certainly did. Call it the ‘curse of The Wax Preachers.’ But still – two Wax Preachers singles at once? Every cloud has a silver lining! And so to these four new super-heavyweight funk sermons. Aldgate East is the uptempo chase theme – all clattery drums drenched in wah-wah and horns while Gamma Ray has a more 70s title-theme vibe and an extended sax solo. On the other 7″, Side A, The Holy Mountain, is again the uptempo bump – in this case with a fat extended drum breakdown – with Side B, Sun Trap (the Monkey’s favourite of the four) characterised by its pimp-strutting rhythm n bounce. Consider yourself to have been served the funky word!
