There are covers and there are covers. This is a cover. Why? Because Super Freak‘s lyrical tribute to a liberated kind of girl by braided-hair/ shiny suit-wearing 80s funkster Rick James has been re-worked in a 70s reggae style by French trio Dub Shepherds and Paris based keyboard player Soul Sugar which has resulted in a banger. Between them they slow down and bass-up James’ original, wrangling it into a warmer, less abrasive and, dare I say it, altogether better place. Also comes in a dub mix of course (which appears on the flipside of the 45) so you can really float around inside the bass. Altogether now, “She’s a very kinky girl…”
