Just got the heads up from the producer of Craig Charles’ Radio 6 Funk & Soul Show that there’s this hour long documentary going out at 10 pm on Radio 2 on Monday on Wilson Pickett. Entitled The Wicked Pickett: The Life And Times of Wilson Pickett it features Steve Cropper (of Stax house band Booker T & The MGs fame) and Bobby Womack. It’s also presented by Wilson Pickett fan Roger Daltrey – famous for being lead singer of rock legends The Who and playing Buddy’s teddy-boy dad on dodgy eighties TV series ‘Buddy.’ As a kid I used to hear the words ‘Wilson Pickett’ but see ‘The Flying Pickets’ in my head and it wasn’t until I saw The Commitments that this alarming misunderstanding was cleared up. And if you don’t know who the Fying Pickets are, you won’t know how alarming this schoolboy error was. Should you be in any way unclear about the identity and legacy of one of the greatest soul singers ever (responsible for rnb and soul tunes like Mustang Sally, In The Midnight Hour and Land Of 1000 Dances or funky cuts like Engine Number 9) you are strongly advised to tune in on Monday. Of course, it being the twenty-first century with an interweb and all you can actually tune in any time you like over the subsequent week as it’ll be on the Radio 2 website for seven days. Check Engine Number 9 below. Who knows you might find something you want to remix or sample…
