The punk-friendly wing of contemporary northern soul seems to be in rude health if the new single from Santa Cruz band The Inciters is anything to go by. A re-recording of the title track from the band’s ’23 LP, Bring Back The Weekend is not just an admirable sentiment but in this instance a big old dancefloor stomper and a cover (with different lyrics, obviously) of 1972 Nolan Porter cut, If I Could Only Be Sure. The video finds the band performing in a garage and, appropriately for such a blue-eyed soul affair, surrounded by scooters, while the release comes accompanied by a 12-page comic book where you’ll discover yet more scooters, soul weekenders and more mod fashion than you can shake a stick at.
