Give it up for Kansas City soul crew The Freedom Affair who absolutely nail the spirit of a soulful seventies funk on new single Get My Share. The track is the first single from the band’s forthcoming self-titled second LP and the PR bills it as a, “soulful fusion where Muscle Shoals meets Memphis,” which in this case is an entirely non-hyperbolic statement. The track was recorded in Royal Studios, Memphis on – wait for it – the very same Ampex tape machine used for all Hi Records hits up until 1974 and was the first time the machine had been used since that year! The lyrics, penned by the band’s trio of female vocal leads, focus on the hardships in overcoming a playing field that is far from level and the delivery matches anything on offer in 1974 over pulsing bass and a simple backbeat leavened by Rhodes, Wurlitzer, guitar and classic horns. You’ll definitely be wanting to get your share.
