SMILE DAVIS: Squabble Funk b/w Dogfish (Vinyl 7″)

Surely not news of a second banging Uluru 45 already? Well, actually, yes, though in truth the closeness is purely down to the monkey – release dates were actually over a month apart. The ‘banging’ bit is the straight truth though and this time it’s double Smile Davis action as Uluru’s resident producer mashes up the great and good of hip-hop with his choice of beats. On this one, Squabble Funk finds Kendrick Lamarr’s Squabble Up vocals slightly pitched-up and the original’s rather sterile boom-clap-based rhythm jettisoned in favour of something rather more phat and funky and sounding all the better for it. Equally entertaining is flipside Dogfish on which Doechii’s Catfish ‘pella gets some classic reggae leverage by being under-pined with Dawn Penn’s No No No riddim – that’s what I’m talking about – tell a bitch hoorah!
