The PR’s going with Cymande and Isaac Hayes as the big influences the new Souvenir/ Green Ray single from Timmion signings Rosettes who are also apparently known as ‘the Khruangbin of the north.’ Well, they’ve got a female vocalist. To be fair, the Khruangbin comparison makes a kind of sense on the blissed-out Souvenir and maybe both tracks vocally, while the more energetic Green Ray is powered by a ‘dry’ funk drum break and some soul jazzy touches that aren’t all that Khruangbin-y or even especially Hayes-y or Cymande-y either. Maybe all these comparisons that don’t quite work are doing the band an injustice though. Maybe it’s just that they’ve blended their influences in such a way as to transcend them. One to watch then.
