Time was when ‘cinematic soul’ of the variety that graced late sixties and early seventies film and TV soundtracks was thin on the ground whereas these days it’s hard to avoid. The weird thing is, none of the new stuff is at all bad and some of it, is really good. Islands On Tape’s new 45 falls into the select latter group. “For fans of Sven Wünder, Les Baxter, Madlib and MF DOOM” says the PR and that’s a reasonable pitch. Title track Dust Conspiracy – the only extant track from the forthcoming 3-tracker which blends library music, psych-funk and exotica and is the brainchild of musician and composer Nitzan Dana – began with just a bassline and drum samples but eventually grew into a totally live spy-funk-ish affair. The other two tracks, Cellar No. 7 and Speed Run promise to deliver equally cinematic materially tipping hats to Alessandroni and Morricone and classic Italian soundtracks in general.
