HANNAH WILLIAMS & THE TASTEMAKERS: Work It Out (2012)

The first single off the forthcoming Hannah Williams & The Tastemakers LP Hill Of Feathers is soul-bluesy slowie Work It Out which aims, with the aid of Hannah’s ample vocal chords, to capture the pain of a failing relationship. The video features the band in suitably sombre mode halfway up a hill in an autumnal forest interspersed with flickery Georges Melies-style footage of a pair of lovelorn puppets who look like extras from the Metz Judderman ads. In fact, what with the boy puppet getting blindsided by a falling tree trunk while his erstwhile puppet lover creepily looms over him halfway through, it’s by no means uncertain that the Judderman hasn’t been lurking in the background between frames. By the end of it both of them are apparently dead and we’ve all learnt something about wandering around in a strange forest.

If you lapped up the last Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings album or dug the A-side of Martha High’s recent single – this one’s for you. Cop it off the player below.
