In the wake of Freedust’s rather good Groove Chronicles album from last summer have come the remixes. Number three of these finds Mako & Mr Bristow re-working Bardo-featuring cut, Did You Hear The News and taking it in a substantially different direction to the original. While Bardo’s two 16-bar verses are retained, the sung hook is jettisoned in favour of an instrumental one featuring vocal samples and scratches and the hook is also the only part of the remix to feature the original break whic is elsewhere replaced by the phattest of Bongolian Beat Mountain drum breaks. Out also goes the downbeat bassline to be replaced by something a whole lot jazzier and upbeat from a different LP track Do Your Thing. And whadyaknow? Looks like Mako & Mr Bristow took a deep dive into Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory sound, channelling that raw, jazzy Native Tongues groove.
