DON COVAY AND THE JEFFERSON LEMON BLUES BAND/ HARVEY MANDEL: If There’s A Will There’s A Way/ Baby Batter (Vinyl 7″)

The Rocafort Records crew continue their services to djs and lovers of early seventies soul material everywhere with another ‘first time on 45’ appearance of one of their favourite soul cuts. That’ll be the heavily blues-tinged soul of the Don Covay and Donny Hathaway-penned If There’s A Will There’s A Way (as sampled by Pete Rock) which, as the PR has it, blends Covay’s raw, Southern soul stylings with Hathaway’s jazzier influences. On the flip you’ll find a track that is something of a kindred spirit in Harvey Mandel’s Baby Batter which starts out a bit jazzy, but ends up very bluesy-psychedelic. How’s that for a winter warmer?
(Out 10 January on Rocafort Records)
