[RATING: 5] Rising UK soul outfit Ephemerals belie their name once more with an album sampler that indicates new material all set to capitalise on their already impressive success including support from the likes of Craig Charles, Gilles Peterson and Groove Armada plus a playlisting on Radio 1Xtra. If you’re not already familiar with this band, imagine the kind of retro soul peddled by the likes of Daptone and Timmion artists but performed by a highly talented young band of musicians who possess the vital assets that many non-Daptone and Timmion rivals wish they could match – namely a singer with a truly powerful soul voice and a songwriter writing hits with the potential to reach far beyond the retro soul-funk enclave. The sampler showcases the variety that new LP Chasin’ Ghosts is set to offer including the first single – emotive, piano n strings drenched soul cut You’ll Never See Me Cry, moody grooves Everyday Killers and Howl and best track, the funky, New Orleans-y, carnival stomp of Well Done. Well done indeed.
