Hard to believe the last time the monkey covered a joint Emma Donovan & The Putbacks’ release before new single Pink Skirt, was the Dawn LP six years ago, but six years it certainly was. Fast forward to the present and the new single shows that things have matured nicely over the intervening period with Pink Skirt – a richly evocative slice of elegiac soul. Lyrically it pays tribute to the grandmother of indigenous Aussie singer Donovan and the time Donovan spent growing up in New South Wales and singing church songs with her grandparents while musically it channels the sort of vibe to be found on Boco’s swamp funk classic Running The Mardi Gras which all bodes well for the forthcoming LP.
