Let There Be Nothing is the new single by Ella Thompson featuring (among others) members of her Melbourne mates Surprise Chef. Described in the PR blah as, “a reimagining of 60s and 70s soul influences…[sitting]…somewhere between Baby Rose’s collaboration with Badbadnotgood and Thee Sacred Souls,” it turns on a rock solid 85 bpm drum break with a cinematic feel about it. Yes, my friends, we have here an example from the genre formerly known as ‘trip-hop’ featuring a powerful vocal from Thompson along with a flute, and a big horns break that’s only a couple of bits of tremelo guitar away from a Bond theme. As it turns out the track was inspired by The Sopranos – specifically the bit when Carmela Soprano walks away from husband Tony. If you need an anthem for walking away from something when things don’t feel right and bugger the consequences – this one’s for you.
