BILL KING: Atlanta Underground (1979 Reissue)

BILL KING: Atlanta Underground (1979 Reissue)The last couple of years have proved fertile for Bill King who has not only produced stuff in collaboration with son Jesse ‘Dubmatix’ King as J&B Kings, but also seen him deliver new stuff and – as in this case – reissues of old stuff that previously didn’t get quite the love it deserved. Atlanta Underground (which seems to be a tribute to the district in downtown Atlanta) was King’s take on jazzy disco in 1979 and the roll-call of the other musicians who played on it is impressive to say the least: Bob Dylan’s/Miles Davis bassist Harvey Brooks, guitarist David Myles who played on from Stevie Wonder live support and backing outfit Wonderlove, Wayne Cochran’s drummer Kevin White and Art Blakey’s sideman Harvey Whitehead on percussion. On top of that Henry Mancini’s saxman Skip Lane provided alto sax and string arrangement. Unsurprisingly, the resulting recording is also rather impressive.
