Adrian Younge & Samantha Schmütz is an artistic collaboration to conjure with as the Emmy-award-winning, analogue-loving composer Younge teams up with Brazilian singer Schmütz for what seems to be his next enterprise following the imminent arrival of the third volume of his Something About April project. To herald this comes first single Depois Do Amor. Er – doesn’t that literally mean something like ‘after love’? It does, but less in the post-coital sense (though Younge’s got form here and isn’t above delving into retro cinema erotica soundtrack vibes to great effect) so much as in the post-love affair melancholy sense. As soulful and cinematic as anything Younge has done, the music on Depois Do Amor is full of lush string arrangements and the track (as indeed the forthcoming Samantha Y Adrian LP also promises to) joins the dots between 70s Brazilian pop and 70s California soul. Meanwhile, Schmütz’s yearning vocals convey perfectly both the emotional payload and the requisite amount of 70s retro vibes.
