It’s always a surprise that no really big hip-hop cut ever came out using Mr Big Stuff as the main sample. I mean – Heavy D & The Boyz were hardly hiding the fact that they’d used it as the main sample on their track Mr Big Stuff but while the New Jack Swing-style drum machine they opted to use might have worked at the time it pretty much killed the track for posterity. Anyway – along comes The Fritz, righting that historical wrong by placing a fat funk drum break under a Jean Knight sample and then laying down an acapella from Lil Cease (along with Biggie and Lil Kim) on top. Dancefloor satisfaction guaranteed. Over on the flip Funkanizer puts Aretha in the blender along with the Unwind Yourself sax sample and a host of crowd-pleasing FX on Respect 900. Some people might argue about how much respect that shows for the Queen of Soul but for those clubbing nearly sixty years after the original’s release, that may be less of a concern.
