MUNGO’S HI FI X AZIZA JAYE: That Thing EP

As anyone with even a passing interest in reggae will know, the genre has a long tradition of taking hits from other genres and re-imagining them with cavernous bass and an offbeat skank. Such is the title track of the new EP from Glasgow soundsystem Mungo’s Hi-Fi and Sheffield singer Aziza Jaye which is of course a cover of Lauryn Hill’s massive late-90s R&B banger Doo Wop (That Thing) – albeit one with lyrics adapted by Jaye. It’s also every bit as effective as you’d expect. The balance of tracks is made up by the dancehall action of So It Go, the murky synth-bass-powered antics of the Solo Banton-featuring Nah Follow and – of course – an echo-n-FX-laden That DUB spin on the title track. Boom.
