As an old mate said to me the other day, “When considering commenting online – what people should consider first is – ‘Who actually needs to hear my opinion?'” Sage advice and thus usually completely ignored in a society where social media algorithms are designed to derive maximum drama from content in order to drive ‘engagement’ and maximise advertising revenue to further line the already obscenely bulging coffers of oxygen thieves like Musk and ‘Zuck.’ And what does this have to do with the new EP, Girl With The Micro Fringe from Freethinker Funk Essence? You might well ask. Turns out he was so incensed when he heard about the misogynistic bile spat at a punk online about her micro-fringe that he felt he had to draw a line in the sand. Some might feel that attempting to stop this kind of online hate is like pushing piss uphill with a Rizla but the alternative is to do nothing except reflect that the situation ‘is what it is.’ But that’s the kind of attitude that gave us Hitler. Happily, FFE wasn’t alone in his endeavours and so his throbbing original funkstrumental gets a more psych-jazz-breaks-style re-up from Clairvo, a cleaner synth-led mix from Funkanizer and minimalist one from Omegaman.
