VARIOUS: RECORD KICKS 10th (2013)

Record Kicks 10th? Tenth what? Traffic offence? Cup of tea in twenty four hours? Notch on the bedpost? The answer is ‘tenth birthday’ of course, as the Italian label celebrates a decade of bringing funk, soul, jazz, afrobeat, ska, reggae and boogaloo to the people. I celebrated my tenth birthday by blowing out ten candles on my cake and unwrapping a Shakin Stevens cassette. Record Kicks are going somewhat larger with a twenty one track compilation of release highlights, new singles and exclusives.

When the preview audio arrived in the monkeyboxing office, MB taxi driver ‘Jazzy’ Dave actually started salivating and babbling things like, “Third Coast Kings exclusive! Baker Brothers exclusive! Liberators exclusive! New singles from Nick Pride & The Pimptones, Dojo Cuts, and The Crabs Corporation & Susan Cadogan! I need to get my party dress!” We let that last bit hang there for a moment and then resumed our listening experience which revealed the following gems: Hannah Williams & The Tastemakers’ Barbara Lynn cover (also a recent RK single), the sun-kissed soul of that New Mastersounds/ Corinne Bailey Rae track, the hayseed funk of Diplomats Of Solid Sound’s Give Me One More Chance, Link Quartet’s sitar-funk wig-out Spider Baby and, best of all, The Hawk’s class northern soul team-up with Little Hannah Collins – Don’t Judge A Book.
(Out 4 March on Record Kicks)
