Long known, among other things, for his skills with Latin edits, Voodoocuts takes it one stage further on new one Yes You Can by also making the A-side A Tribe Called Quest remix. Of course it takes a brave man to tackle ATCQ since The Ummah’s production ranks among the best ever in hip-hop, while you need singular courage to apply yourself to reworking Tip, Phife and Ali Shaheed Mohammed’s biggest ever hit. Nonetheless, VC obviously quested like a Tribe does, crafting a beat from an old 70s Joe Cuba cut to underpin his chosen ‘pella – and whadyaknow? The rhythm really fits like a snug glove. Some might say VC has done you a really big favour, others might argue this track really has a lot of flavour – either way – he has most definitely kicked it. Over on the flip meanwhile, you’re invited to dance to some uptempo cumbia action on Bailen Mi Cumbia (which one presumes is a beefed up VC edit of the original) though if you’re tempted to blend this one with a hip-hop acapella yourself, you’ll need to find something around 120 bpm. Or you could just drop it ‘neat.’
