Volume 5 of the more or less annual event that is Timewarp Music‘s Lime Sorbet compilation series (selected by Quincy Jointz!) makes its appearance somewhat later in the year this year than last, although that does render its name rather more seasonally appropriate. This being the case let’s stick our spoon in deep into the bowl and see what flavas it offers…
…and, as past endeavours might have led you to expect, it’s a fruity cocktail of breakbeat material from chilled downtempo-isms to party gear on the borders of nu-funk and ghetto funk-land. There are a number of big names and scene stalwarts on this – Ashley Slater for example, who seems to have popped up on about one release every week for the last month; Jayl Funk, Jazz K.Lipa, Zamali, Clairvo and, of course, Quincy Jointz himself (in the company of Michael DeVellis) who delivers one of the compilation’s highlights in latin big beat banger Homenaje. Also of note are Funky Destination’s wah-wah, keys and police sirens-drenched midtempo slab of funk, 45th Vinyl Street, Tosses’ big beat/ crime funk number Good Trip and the sweetly blissed-out dub-rap of Groove Monkz’ Promised Land.
