VARIOUS: Freestyle 4 Funk 4 (Compiled by Timewarp)(2014)

Freestyle 4 Funk 4 TimewarpTimewarp release another double-sized, double-themed volume of beats here in the shape of Freestyle 4 Funk 4 (not to be confused with 2008’s Freestyle 4 Funk) and it’s another one of the label’s massive ‘almost’ retrospective releases. That’s ‘retrospective’ because it finds label main man Angelous ‘Timewarp‘ Stoumpos sifting through the label’s colossal back catalogue for the best bits and ‘almost’ because some of the tracks here are actually – er – new, and not from the back catalogue after all. The first half of this game of two halves is all about the funk and dub influences while the second half is all about the nu-disco cum house side of things.

Best cuts are the boom-skankin’ breaks of Timewarp Inc’s Economic Boom which opens proceedings, Niles Phillips’ golden era-hip-hop-influenced What’cha Doin, the energetic, stripped-back Ragga Twins-featuring Ghetto Drunk (another Timewarp Inc. number), Mister T’s heavy b-boy breaks rework of Zamali’s Funky Rotator, Trotter’s hypnotic refluff of Banderas’ Handbrake, the roadhouse breaks of Funk Destination’s Born To Be Bad and the dope soul-jazzy funk vibes of Zamali’s Unite. No shortage of quality breakbeat currency then.
