The second of three singles in the run-up to Tom Caruana’s forthcoming Salsa Verde LP is this, Perfect Match, featuring no fewer than three guests – to wit: Large Professor, Tiye Phonenix and Nick Maxwell. Salsa Verde is part of Def Presse’s ongoing series where (through a canny deal struck with KPM) they get to give producers the exclusive keys to the KPM library music vaults. But it seems Caruana’s taken a light-handed approach using samples only for the topline here – which’ll be the opening harps and what sounds like a Strawberry Fields-style mellotron flute voice – while playing the drums and bass himself. Large Pro and Phoenix meanwhile engage in the cut and thrust of dating talk, which must leave Nick Maxwell to do the scratching, one suspects. After all – three’s a crowd, right?
