This might be packaged ‘Timbo King X Ras Ceylon X Dawit Justice’ all new school style with those X’s but it’s about as old school 90s hip-hop as you can get with King n Ras holding forth over a phat Dawit beat. Oh what, Timbo King of Wu-affilitates Royal Fam and Ras Ceylon the first Sri Lankan to release a hip-hop LP back in’99? The very same, though our Ras seems to have relocated from The Bay to NYC or perhaps back to NYC since then. Which is where you’ll spot him in the video for Brownstonez alongside compadres Timbo and Dawit. The trio combine forces to stick it to the man who is now busy making benjamins gentrifying the very same Brooklyn neighbourhood that he was busy vilifying as the locus of serious crime back in the day when our three heroes were growing up there. And if the bars on Brownstonez are dope, Dawit’s beat is equally a star. This finds him flipping some classic Coltrane into a hip-hop groove that is by turns ominous and pensive and he does it so deftly it’ll give you shivers. The track is lifted from the Timbo King X Ras Ceylon X Dawit Justice LP Jacket Fulla Medalz.
