The Niceguys are back with occasional vocalist-collaborator Bobby Saint for Put Some Love – another efficient slice of stuff that would have been known as ‘nu-funk’ back in the ’00s prior to the avalanche of wobble-bass tiresomeness that rapidly smothered it. Now that people are once again allowed to combine hip-hop-strength breakbeats with nu-school singing, and production ethics without drenching the whole thing in buzzsaw bass things have once again become a lot more soulful and groovy. So here Saint is hollering joyfully about – er – well the monkey’s not exactly sure what he’s hollering about joyfully but it certainly is joyful over funky horns, smoothly jangling guitar, a rolling breakbeat and a blissfully non-wobble subby bassline.
