Apart from playing session horns on a shedload of soul and rock songs between the late sixties and the mid eighties, the Muscle Shoals Horns also liked to drop their own stuff – notably horns-led (obviously), bass-popping disco-era funk like Break Down now edited for your delectation by Steppin Tones. Even more, full-on than their own Born To Get Down, the original Break Down featured a full horns broadside, squalling rock guitar, pounding disco bass, four-to-the-floor drums and a bass-voiced vocal call-out of ‘Break down’ on the bridge. That wasn’t enough for Steppin Tones though. No sir. So he’s done the big beat version. Faster, bassier…big beat-ier, it’s a shoe-in for those sets where you need a bridge from disco to, well, big beat. Or back again.
