Spaghetti Western-themed early reggae? Somebody’s been listening to The Upsetters and it turns out those somebodies would be Jorge Pezzimenti of The Loving Paupers and Agent Jay of The Slackers who drop sweet double-sider Return Of Rondo/ Adrian’s Wall evoking that ’68/’69 era when rocksteady was morphing into early reggae. It’s not just the name of A-side Return Of Rondo that nods to the genre popularised by Leone, Corbucci and Sollima either – a fact to which the tense tremolo guitar on Rondo attests. There’s a slight lilt to the rhythm on this one which in ’68 Jamaica was the incoming sound of reggae while the simpler rhythm of B-side Adrian’s Wall provides classic rocksteady thrills. Either way, you’ve got your hands on two sureshot instrumentals – and for free too if downloads are your bag. For vinyl, you’ll have to wait a little longer but you can pre-order now – see below.
