[RATING: 5] Having said in the previous post that the start of January isn’t traditionally a fertile period in record companies’ release schedules, there is of course an exception. Step forward Original Gravity Records who have dropped two 45 releases in the last week or two and have a third on pre-order. In this post it’s all about a cover of Big Maybelle’s Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On previously and most famously covered by Jerry Lee Lewis. That’ll be Junior Dell & The D-Lites brand new take on things, re-versioned inna classic ska/ bluebeat style and re-titled, of course, Whole Lotta Skankin’ Going On. As usual, the ‘band’ pretty much just consists of multi-instrumentalist label boss Neil Anderson plus a session singer who sounds like he had a whale of a time (‘me top rankin’; whole lotta skankin’ going on’) making this. Flip it over and it’s all about the ridiculously upbeat Hold The Riddim. Altogether now – skank, baby skank!
