Say hello to new single Hypocrite from Brooklyn emcee Gregg Green and UK-based producer Pimpernel Jones. ‘Hypocrite’ eh? Looks like someone’s in the firing line but I wonder who it could be? Seems they’ve previously been called out by Malcom X, Patrice Lumumba (Congolese independence leader, m’lud), Fela Kuti, Bob Marley and Madiba (Nelson Mandela, m’lud) among others and are guilty of murder and bombing whilst claiming innocence. ‘The man’ then, clearly, who has been keen to shaft the oppressed of at least five different nations either African or with a large African diasporic population. Also very much the rich – Green name-checks the ‘Rockefellers’ which one suspects is shorthand for ‘greedy rich bastards everywhere.’ Gregg’s hip to their antics though and intent on raising the consciousness of the oppressed over Jones’ deceptively jaunty beat featuring acoustic guitar and a hip-hop beat constructed from Afro-style drums. Add in a video shot in Amsterdam, Holland (where better to raise consciousness than in the country of the International Court and the city famed for consciousness-raising recreational pharmaceuticals?) and job’s a good ‘un.
