Here’s Favelas then, the new single from Connie Price & The Keystones. You remember Connie Price & The Keystones, right? It’s basically multi-instrumentalist Dan Ubick of Breakestra, The Lions and Night Owls fame along with whoever he ropes into work with him for any given project. The band’s ouevre takes in funk, soul, psychedelia and hip-hop and on this current release assumes the form of a moody bit of mid-tempo psych-funk that (on the vocal version at least) underpins the unmistakeable bars of legendary emcee Sadat X of Brand Nubian and the vocals of singer Diana Purim. And the lyrical topic? Turns out living in the NYC projects has much in common with living in Rio’s favelas with all that that entails. Also comes in instrumental form on the flip.
