BOCO: Running The Mardi Gras/ Smile (2016)

Running The Mardi Gras Boco[RATING: 5] Hats off to Big Crown Records who are shortly to save respectable vinyl-buying members of the public the best part of a grand by re-pressing Boco’s super-rare Running The Mardi Gras b/w Smile 45 beloved of funk and northern soul djs alike. Smile is sonic haze of laidback summery psychedelia but what most will really want it for is Running The Mardi Gras. This might open in a similarly mellow manner but soon walks on gilded splinters over swamp-funky voodoo rhythms that include a dramatic drum break and moody vocals that commemorate the rural bayou practice of ‘running the Mardi Gras’ which is about as far from the carnival atmosphere of New Orleans as an alligator-haunted and Spanish moss-draped bayou is from the streets of the Big Easy.
(Out 3 June on Big Crown Records)
